What’s the State of FinTech Conferences in 2020?

With the world still actively working in reducing the spread of COVID-19, large gatherings and public events are need a dramatic transformation. Organizers have had to choose between cancelling, postponing, or virtualizing their scheduled conference. In FinTech, the second half of the year is packed with headliner conferences such as Money 2020, LendIt, and Finnovate on the calendar — 2019’s June - Dec. conference lineups were the most attended of the year.

Here’s a brief global recap of remaining FinTech conferences in 2020, which have gone virtual or are yet to be postponed. As an event date draws near, we will continuously update the status of conferences (especially with those who have not announced going virtual).

the new normal of Virtual conferences

The world has gone remote as connections take place via Zoom calls and group chats for families, friends, and co-workers. Individuals globally have been on more video calls over the last 4 months than in the previous 2 years. Even though the level of interaction and engagement may not be the same, there is still value in actively participating and creating new or strengthening old connections. For those attending conferences on an annual basis, this is a challenging adjustment to make so quickly. As the COVID-19 infection rate continues to fluctuate, virtual may be the only way to go for industry events in the next 6-12 months.

For attendees still looking to participate and make the most of their virtual experience, here are some best practices:

  • Being truly present in the event, absorbing material from sessions, engaging with presenters, and using chat and other networking tools to meet with other attendees. Avoid getting distracted or multi-tasking;

  • Prep your calendar before the conference so you can decide what presentations, partner booths, speakers, and connections you’d like to make. Attending live sessions and having question answered in real-time by industry experts is more valuable over pre-recorded ones;

  • Get the most out of speaker sessions by offering thoughtful questions and dialogue about the latest industry trends, products, and strategies;

  • Networking will feel different, but there are multiple tools and features to make it easier to engage with more attendees — using conference hashtags, live chats, slack channels, and the conference directory;

Overall, virtual FinTech conferences offer attendees a chance to engage with more participants, choose what speakers and sessions they want to focus on, and absorb content on a deeper level. As the industry becomes more experienced with remote events, expect the quality and value to increase for both organizers and attendees.
